We love this book because of how much there is to learn about people and energy. As well as the silly puns!
Fifteen wizards living in a barren place - the only known wizards remaining in the world - need to find apprentices to pass on their knowledge of magic and wizardry to before they die. They decide to send eight wizards into the world in search of young people with the right spirit and attitude. But the wizards have grown so accustomed to communicating telepathically that they struggle just to remember how to speak out loud. Seven of the wizards bring back an apprentice, but four of the seven candidates are girls, and girls have never been wizards before. Is it even possible to teach girls to become wizards? And do these girls have what it takes? Each apprentice has to go before the higher council who will decide whether they have the right spirit, stamina and strength to become wizards. All of the candidates have their own problems with language and communication, giving the author an opportunity to explore the ways kids adapt to protect themselves from life experiences. Being accepted as an apprentice will change their lives. But are any of the candidates good enough, and are any of the wizards? The future of wizardry is at stake.
